Mass Shooting in Las Vegas
Just after 22:00 on Sunday October 1, 2017, a mass shooting was carried out at the open-air Route 91 Harvest Festival, a country music concert, killing 59 people, to date, and injuring over 527 others. The gunman was identified as 64-year-old Nevada resident Stephen Paddock.
Although we have seen a number of scenarios involving active shooters at concert halls and venues in recent years, this particular attack demonstrates a new modus operandi at a mass attended public event, i.e. shooting from a high-rise position at a distance with heavy automatic firepower. Similar modus operandi involving a sniper are more recognized within the context of VIP protection, more specifically for events attended by Heads of State.
