Families with Children Carry out Suicide Bombings in Indonesia

| Topic : Explosives,Physical,Suicide | Region : Asia | Tag : Case Study

Three families, including children, carried out a spate of suicide bombings targeting churches and police in the course of 24 hours in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city. A total of twelve people were killed and an additional 41 were hospitalized in an attack which occurred on May 13, 2018 along with three members of a family in a separate attack on the same day. One day later six civilians and four officers were injured in a third attack.

Using families, including children, to carry out terror attacks is a new modus operandi and horrendous phenomenon. We are only aware of one other case involving the ringleader of the foiled 2006 Transatlantic Liquids Plot, Abudllah Ahmed Ali, who suggested that he bring his then 2-year-old son with him on the flight so as not to arouse suspicion.
