Cyber Attack Against Boeing

Incident Date : 2018 | Topic : Aviation,Cyber | Region : North America | Tag : Case Study

On Wednesday March 28, 2018, Boeing was hit by the WannaCry computer virus. The WannaCry virus, which first surfaced in a May 2017 worldwide cyber attack, exploits a flaw in the Windows operating system to gain access to a network and attacks computer software using ransomware, locking users out of their computers until they pay a fee.

The attack highlights the importance of segmentation/separation which should be implemented between administrative networks and operational networks, which run critical functions. Proper separation optimizes continuity of operations, even during scenarios in which the administrative networks may be compromised.
